In Australia, Level 2 home sleep studies are covered by Medicare under certain conditions. Level 2 sleep studies are carried out and reported on by specialist sleep physicians, so to access this service, Medicare requires patients to have a referral from their GP.
When you do a sleep study with Pacific Sleep, you will have one or more consultations with a specialist sleep physician, who will take into consideration all other aspects of your health, and liaise with your GP to ensure the best treatment outcomes for you.
In the past, sleep studies were conducted in a hospital sleep laboratory. But with new technology, it is now possible to achieve excellent diagnostic results by doing a sleep study at home.
Pacific Sleep offers home ambulatory diagnostic (also known as a Level 2) sleep studies. One of our specialist sleep physicians will have a consultation with you, to discuss your sleep concerns. Then our clinicians will show you how to set up the test during your appointment with us, and provide you with instructions to take home with you.
The device will start automatically for you. It is completely mobile so you can sleep in whichever position you find comfortable, and get up as many times as you like.
In the morning you simply return the device to us. Your results are analysed by sleep scientists, and reported on by sleep physicians. Our physicians will explain the results to you at your follow-up consultation and make recommendations on ways to improve your sleep health.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep disorder where your breathing is interrupted repeatedly during sleep. Each interruption in breathing is known as an apnoea, which deprives your body of oxygen. Apnoeas occur when the muscles at the back of the throat relax and cause a blockage in the upper airway. Sufferers of sleep apnoea often have repeated events during sleep, which are usually accompanied by loud snoring and disrupted sleep patterns.
There are different types of OSA, which is why it is important to get a complete and expert diagnosis of any sleep disorder.
The risks of untreated sleep apnoea include a number of health problems. Some of these include heart problems, a higher risk of stroke, diabetes, increased risk of accidents including MVA, psychological problems and more.

Pacific Sleep offers Level 2 sleep studies, also known as home sleep studies. These studies provide almost the same level of information as Level 1 in-patient hospital polysomnographies. Pacific Sleep sleep studies are carried out under the guidance of sleep specialists and are covered by Medicare.
Level 3 and Level 4 studies are offered by pharmacies and online providers. These studies provide much less information about a patient’s sleep, and are not covered by Medicare or reviewed by sleep specialists.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of a number of health problems. Some of these include high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, irregular heart beats and heart attack, diabetes, depression, worsening of ADHD, headaches, weight gain, psychological problems and more.
Untreated sleep apneoa impacts relationships, when couples need to sleep apart. The deep fatigue caused by OSA can impact daily performance at work or during studies. Fatigue is a known cause of motor vehicle accidents, and therefore sufferers of OSA are at a greater risk of such events.
